Goodbye
(A short)
Hi!
I’m brand new here so hopefully I post this correctly…
Anyway, here is a 2 page short I wrote. It’s a bit on the heavier side, fair warning.
Let me know what you think and thank you for reading :)
Goodbye
EXT. NEAR/UNDER A SOLITARY, LARGE, LUSH TREE - DAY
M (woman, mid-20s at most) walks over to meet B (woman, same age as M) under a tree. We can’t see much except the two women and the tree. It’s a gorgeous, sunny day that stands in stark contrast to M. There is a heaviness to M that we don’t quite understand.
M
(as she approaches B)
Hey. I’m sorry it’s been so long.
She reaches B.
M (CONT'D)
I should’ve come sooner but I—
B
It’s okay. You’re here now.
M
You always were forgiving.
B
And you always did feel guilty when you shouldn’t.
M smiles sadly and then sits under the tree. B sits next to her. We stay tight on the two women as M looks up at the tree, closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, exhales, opens her eyes and smiles. It’s the first time we see M a bit lighter. B looks around and then looks back at M.
B (CONT'D)
You always did love being outside.
M (smiles)
Am I that predictable?
B
Only to everyone who knows you.
M laughs. It’s a genuine laugh. B smiles, too.
M
God, I miss you.
B
(teasing, trying to keep it light)
Yeah, well. Who wouldn’t?
M looks at B and any lightness that was there is immediately gone. Instead, M looks like she could burst into tears. But she doesn’t.
M
(almost a whisper as she looks at B)
I’m sorry.
For the first time, B has taken on a similar heaviness to M. She doesn’t say anything as she takes in the apology and then looks at their surroundings. It’s a long beat.
M (CONT'D)
There’s so much I have to tell you.
B
(still looking outward)
Let’s just enjoy this, shall we?
She looks back at M and tries to smile, but it’s laced with sadness and it almost breaks M. They sit in silence again for a moment, again not looking at each other.
M
(almost afraid to ask)
Are you okay?
No answer. Beat. Everything starts to spill out. At some point in the proceeding mini-monologue, the camera slowly pans to M and B is completely out of frame.
M (CONT'D)
There’s so much I have to tell you.
I miss you so much. And I’m so sorry for everything. I’m so sorry I haven’t been here. I still think about you all the time. I—I hope you know how much I love you.
(Her voice breaks and a tear escapes.)
How much you mean to me. I’m so scared you didn’t know. What if you never knew?
She starts to cry and as she does, the camera slowly pans back to where B was sitting to reveal B’s gravestone.
End of short.
